Her teams have won eight regional girls championships and the boys have won seven district championships. Shari has served on the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Swimming and Diving Advisory Committee and the Iowa High school Athletic Association’s Advisory committee. Shari has been head middle school girls and boys swimming coach at Urbandale and then +at Johnston from 1987-2019.
Her philosophy for athletics is her philosophy for life. “How I act and what I say must always demonstrate respect. As I coach I must reflect motivational signals to my athletes, staff, administration and families. I must foster a strong belief in our program and in the athletes themselves to be and do the best they can in and out of the pool. We must expect the best from ourselves in all that we do. As athletes and coaches we must remember that we need to represent ourselves, our schools, and our communities. Athletics can teach us all responsibility, sportsmanship and cooperation; it can instill a sense of pride in us that can only come from hard work and participation. I have been extremely blessed to have been able to work with thousands of athletes in and out of the pool. The swimmers and their families have taught me many valuable lessons throughout my career.” - Shari Walling
